Check out what's new in iOS 16

Apple released iOS 16, the latest version of the software that runs on the iPhone, yesterday. There are several changes in iOS 16 that we assumed we'd do an overview to show MacRumors readers what they can look forward to when the update comes out this fall.

You'll need to watch the video to see how iOS 16 works, but here is a list of everything we talk about:

  • Lock Screen: Everything about the Lock Screen has been changed. It can be changed, it works with widgets, and there are a lot of new things to try out.
  • Notifications: Changes have been made to notifications to go with the new Lock Screen. So they don't get in the way of the widgets on the Lock Screen, they now come up from the bottom. Notifications also have a new look with images and text that are bigger and bolder, and you can view them in a list, stacked, or count view.
  • Focus Mode: You can now link different Focus Modes to different lock screens. This completely changes how your iPhone looks when you use a Focus. Focus now has new filters, updated schedules, easier setup, and a better list of things to silence or let through.
  • Home: The layout of the Home app has been changed, making it easier to see and control all of your devices on one screen. Your favorites and your rooms are all on the main Home tab, and the categories at the top give you quick access to lights, climate control, security products, and more.
  • Dictation: When using dictation, speaking text and then editing it, you can now switch between voice and touch.
  • Live Text for Video: The Live Text feature in iOS 15, which lets the iPhone find text in photos, has been added to video. You can copy and paste, look up, and translate text in a video frame if you pause it.
  • Shared Tab Groups: In Safari, you can now work with other people on a group of tabs. So, if you are planning a trip, everyone can add links that everyone else can see. This makes it easier than ever to plan and share links.
  • iCloud Shared Photo Library: With iCloud Shared Photo Library, up to six family members can share photos without any trouble. Photos can be uploaded automatically to the shared album based on the settings you make, and you can even upload photos directly from the Camera app to the shared library.
  • Maps: You can now add up to 15 stops to a route using the Maps app, which now supports multiple stops.
  • Mail: Apple updated the Mail app in big ways. There's a way to undo sending an email, a way to schedule emails, a way to remind you to reply to an email so you don't forget, and a way to remind you to follow up on emails that haven't been answered. Search has also been made better. Mail now works with rich links, and if you mention an attachment but forget to include it, it will let you know.
  • Visual Look Up: Apple added a strange new feature called Visual Look Up that lets you grab the subject of an image, separate it from the background, and drag it into another app. It works automatically and can be used in Photos, Safari, Screenshots, and other apps.
  • Messages: With iOS 16, you can now edit a message, undo a message, and mark a message as unread. You can get back messages that you've deleted and use SharePlay with them, just like you can with FaceTime. SharePlay lets you watch a TV show or use an app with someone else while talking to them in the Messages app. All of these features are only available with iMessage and not with SMS.
  • Medication: The Health app in iOS 16 has a feature that tracks your medications and reminds you to take them. It also works with the Apple Watch.
  • Fitness: If you don't have an Apple Watch, you can use the Fitness app in iOS 16 to track your steps and activity and get an estimate of how many calories you've burned.

At the moment, only developers can use iOS 16, but Apple will release a public beta of iOS 16 in July. Before the new iPhones come out in September, the software will go through several months of beta testing so that features can be improved and bugs can be fixed.
